A Belgian study indicated that consuming birth control pills, and other hormonal methods, might lead to a decline in sexual desire among certain women. Additionally, the study states that desire is not solely tied to hormone levels, but is also affected by a woman's mood, and her partner's sexual desire (libido).

Do birth control pills affect a woman's sexual desire?

When Samar coupled with Khalid, they did not wish to conceive at the start of their relationship, so they decided to utilize contraceptive tablets.

Samar visited the physician who informed her that she should pay attention to the pill's side effects, such as mood fluctuations, breast tenderness, and weight gain.

However, no one prepared her for the impact of taking the pill on libido, or a woman's sexual desire, as she found out after she began taking it that her desire to have sex had significantly diminished.

Testosterone and Women

The Belgian study showed that some women—like Samar, for instance—are sensitive to shifts in testosterone levels when starting to use hormonal contraception.

Testosterone is a hormone present in high concentrations in males, but it is available in small amounts in a female's ovaries.

This study was among the pioneering investigations to examine this vital aspect of birth control methods, such as contraceptive tablets and the vaginal ring.

Fifty-five couples participated in this study, most of whom were university students.

Each of the women used three distinct types of hormonal contraception for three months:

The combined pill (containing a mix of progestin and estrogen)

The mini-pill containing only progestin

The vaginal silicone ring

After this period concluded, the researchers asked the couples questions concerning sexual desire, psychological and sexual health, and whether they were satisfied with their marital relationship.

In addition, the researchers took blood samples from the women to measure the changes in their bodies resulting from the use of hormonal contraceptives.

The Vaginal Ring Is Better Than Birth Control Pills

The study demonstrated that a woman's desire for sexual activity is related to factors unrelated to contraception; one significant factor is the partner; the more his desire for sex increases, the more his partner's desire for it increases.

Another rather obvious factor is that a woman being in a good mood elevates her craving for intimate activity with her partner.

Although some women are more susceptible than others to the effect of hormonal contraceptives, there is variation among the methods concerning sexual desire.

The study revealed that the sexual desire among women utilizing the vaginal ring was greater than the desire of women who used either type of birth control tablet.

In conclusion, the researchers suggest that human sexual desire is influenced by numerous elements, ranging from psychological factors, through the quality of the marital relationship and whether it is proceeding well, up to fluctuations in hormone levels, and genetics.

The desire for sexual activity is linked to the way all these factors interact among themselves.
